The Town of Taos was originally established on May 1, 1796 when 63 families who had petitioned Governor Don Fernando Chac?n were placed in possession of the Don Fernando de Taos land grant by the Alcalde of the Pueblo of Taos, Antonio Jos? Ort?z. The Town has existed as a village under the Spanish Crown, then Mexico, and later when New Mexico became a Territory of the United States in 1846. On May 7, 1934 Taos was incorporated as a municipality under New Mexico State law.
