The Navy Base
The Charleston Navy Yard Historic District contains 57contributing structures and was listed on the NationalRegister of Historic Places in 2006. Construction of the NavyYard began in 1901 as a response to the emergence of theUnited States as a world power. The growth of America'soverseas military presence required an expanded andmodernized navy. As it expanded, the Charleston NavyYard became one of the most significant American navalinstallations in the first half of the twentieth century. Thedistrict contains industrial buildings, administrative buildings,support structures and storage facilities. Buildings in thedistrict reflected national naval construction design trendsranging from 1900 to 1945: (1) Neo-Classical style (circa1903 to 1910; (2) Moderne industrial form (1910s to the endof World War I); (3) the construction of federal works projects(between the World Wars); and (4) the mostly utilitarian formprevalent from the emergency period (late 1930s throughthe end of World War II).HM Number | HM19FJ |
