On this site lived Cyrus Gray Luce, twenty-seventh Governor of Michigan. Born in Ohio in 1824, he moved to Branch County about 1849. He soon became involved in township, local and state politics, serving on the Board of Agriculture, in the legislature, and as a member of the 1867 constitutional convention. In 1886 and 1888 he was elected Governor on the Republican ticket. He remained active in the farmer's Grange till his death in Coldwater in 1905.
