At this place on June 16, 1832 between Wisconsin pioneers, under Colonel Henry Dodge, and a band of Black Hawk's Sacs was fought the Battle of the Pecatonica. "The annals of Indian warfare offer no parallel to this battle." Of the twenty-one volunteer soldiers engaged, three were mortally and one severely wounded.

The seventeen Indians were slain. Thus was our land made safe for settlement.
