A major Blackwater River crossing waslocated here at Franklin during the CivilWar. Confederate forces guarded the crossingfrom 1862 to the end of the war as partof the Blackwater defensive line. Severalskirmishes were fought around the pontoonbridge here in 1862 and 1863. During themorning 11 April 1863, Confederate Maj.Gen. John Bell Hood's division crossed theriver on the bridge on its way to aidLt. Gen. James Longstreet's seige of Suffolk.Hood's division recrossed here on 4 May 1863after the end of the siege.
