Dan West was a resident of the Middlebury area when, in 1944, he created the Heifer Project, now Heifer International, an international relief program. This program sends pregnant cows, as well as other livestock, throughout the world to relieve hunger.

This stone previously stood at Dan West Acres, Heifer International's Midwest Regional Headquarters in Goshen, Indiana.
