c.1895
Before the present brick building was built, Atkison & Hutchings Real Estate Agents, the Amazon Refreshment Stand, a market, and a U.S. Express office were tenants in a small wood frame building that stood on this lot. The current building housed a book and jewelry store, as well as beauty shops and ladies ready-to-wear stores prior to the 1962 expansion of Montross Pharmacy. At that time, the soda fountain was moved into this building, and a few years later, a dining room was added in the back. When the high school was two blocks south of the town square, Montross Pharmacy was a popular place for teenagers to meet after school. In 2000, this was the first Winterset eating establishment to ban smoking. The second floor has apartments and it once housed two doctors' offices as well.HM Number | HM1DRI |
