I Saw The Marker

Town of Constantia Comprehensive Land Use Plan says this property is one of the two oldest house sites in Oswego County. Kempwyk is former home site of Francis Van Der Kemp. The marker is located on the north side of NYS Route 49, 1.5 miles west of the Cleveland Post Office or .5 miles of the cannon at Bernhards Bay. It is believed Van Der Kemp was the third or fourth settler on Oneida Lake. His estate consisted of 1,000 acres which he purchased from George Scriba. From 1792 until 1797, Van der Kemp and his family lived here before moving to Oldenbarnevald (Trenton NY). The story of Van der Kemp’s life is monumentally significant in the history of the United States; he was considered a "Scholar in the Wilderness" and influential to John Quincy Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Perhaps his most notable contributions to this country was his idea of a canal across the state. (Excerpted from Cleveland Historical Society website)
