The young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps' Company 1252 built much of what you see in the park today, including the comfort station and concession stand here. They built these structures from heavy stone and wooden timbers that they quarried and sawed themselves. The young men of Company 1252 pose in front of the Area 3 comfort station, which they completed in 1937. Note the benches in the foreground where stones were shaped for use in the building. From 1933 to 1942, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) rescued roughly two million men from poverty and provided them with jobs doing sorely needed conservation work during America's worst economic crisis, the Great Depression. CCC Company 1252 was housed at Hamlin Beach State Park from 1935-1941. Company 1252 built the concession stand in Area 3 between 1939 and 1940. A small shed and a larger barn were used during the winter for cutting and shaping some of the stones. The stones were numbered so that they could be easily assembled when the weather improved.
