Bill Menor recognized this single channel of the Snake River offered an ideal crossing point. This "reaction ferry" design dates back to ancient times, using the river current to propel the boat. The ferry you see here is a replica.< Sidebar : >Bird's Eye View1. The ferry is on the west bank with pontoons parallel to the current. Traveler pulleys roll along cable. Water pushes against pontoons.2. Captain turns pilot wheel right to lengthen the rope on the right side. Rope angles, pontoons catch current. Ferry moves east.3. The captain turns the pilot wheel to the left, equalizing the ropes, stopping the ferry. Ferry arrives on east bank.HM Number | HM1NJ4 |
