They discovered structures that Antonieta Espejo named Tlatelolco 1 in 1944. By 1992 archaeologists suggested exploring the building by using two tunnels that went in through the entrance of the building all the way up to the center, this way they could register all the structures that were there and the artifacts that could help make out the foundation of Mexico Tlatelolco. So, the site was explored from that year until 2011. First a stairway to stage 2 was located and it was named "Etapa 1a" (Stage 1A). Remains of another stairway was located and it was named Stage 1B and finally at about 26 ft of depth and right in center of a pilaster that stuck out from the floor was found. According to its shape and the materials that were used in its construction it can be considered to belong to a building built in the period of the Toltecas, as confirmed by the Tolteca Chichimeca history.
