Military Road 1802 —— · · · ——
After the Revolutionary War, the federal government saw the need for a "military highway" from Lewiston to Black Rock, where a planned fortification would guard the entrance to the Niagara River. Cleared in 1802, the road connected Fort Niagara to Fort Tompkins. During the War of 1812, General George McClure (1771- 1850) retreated on Military Road from Fort Niagara to Buffalo after British retaliation for the burning of Newark (now Niagara on the Lake).
