Scouts and Trappers visited this area by 1811 and rendezvous were held 1829, 1830, and 1836.
Camp Magraw (sic), 1857, site 2.1 miles north.
Fort Thompson, 1857-1858, was located 4.4 miles north of here.
Camp Augur, 1869-1870, became the original Camp Brown, 1870-1871. Location was 1/2 mile west on the south side of Main Street.
Lander was named in 1875 in honor of Gen. Frederick West Lander.
