Hurricane Hazel
Oct. 15, 1954

Hurricane Hazel made landfall at 9:15am 30 miles north of Myrtle Beach. Wind gusts of 160 mph and sustained winds of 140 mph coupled with an abnormally high lunar tide resulted in an 18 foot storm surge. 80% of the Myrtle Beach oceanfront development was destroyed. Hurricane Hazel was the deadliest cyclone of the decade. Because of its impact, "Hazel" was permanently retired as a name for tropical cyclones.
