Baltimore Black History
Lucille Clifton lived in West Baltimore from 1967. She became poet-in-residence at Coppin State University in 1971. By 1974, she had published two important collections of poetry that focused on black urban life at a very personal level. The strength, honesty and moral power of her work earned Clifton lasting fame. The State of Maryland named her Poet Laureate in 1979.
