This Brigade crossed the Chickamauga at Byram's Ford the evening of September 18th and early on the 19th reached this position while moving with its Corps to take position east of Viniard's in the general line of battle then forming there. It halted at this point, deployed on the left of Walthall's Brigade and moved northwardly to the assistance of Forrest's Cavalry and Walker's Division. These forces had been unexpectedly attacked near Jay's Mill by troops of General Thomas' Corps which, by a night march from McLemore's Cove had passed beyond the right of Bragg and was threatening his rear.
