Since the earliest days of the military, the numbers of Soldiers required dictated the need for an open area for unit formations, training, close order drill, practice, ceremonial events and interaction. As time passed, the Parade Field became an essential part of any military installation, whether a permanent post or a temporary camp. It was used for formal occasions, inspections, parades, and official events, but it was also an area where Soldiers could gather in their off-time to play sports, and engage in social activities. In short, it became a centerpiece of Soldier life.
The Parade Ground was an aspect of Soldier life that touched all Soldiers, from the commanders who reviewed the troops and conducted ceremonial events, to the Soldier in the ranks who passed in review, or participated in drill and training. Recreational events were also staged there, from the impromptu games that soldiers organized in their off-duty time, to more formal sporting events that pitted individual units against others. It was also a place for entertainment where the band provided music and various demonstrations were presented.
Traditions Field is a representation of those military Parade Fields, providing a large open space for ceremonies, sporting events, and entertainment. It continues that military tradition and honors all those
Soldiers from our past and our present, who have answered the nation's call to duty.
