Established in 1889 as a Presbyterian mission, First United Presbyterian Church was constructed in 1892 in the Gothic Revival Style by descendants of former slaves. The church played a major role in the area's educational history, serving as the primary sponsor of Athens Academy, a three-room school. Many schools for Black students in the South consisted of only one room. In 2008, the church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
