the greatest of Irish rivers - the lordly Shannon - features oak leaves and acorns, themselves symbols of strength and nobility. The trident represents Limerick City's sovereignty over the mighty Estuary. The river rises in [C]ounty [C]avan and flows southwards through the centre of Ireland broadening out into three great lakes - Lough Allen, Lough Ree and Lough Derg. Towns on or near the river include Drumshambo, Leitrim, Carrick-on-Shannon, Roosky, Lanesboro, Athlone, Clonmacnois, Shannonbridge, Banagher, Portumna, Dromineer, Scariff, Killaloe, Ballina and Limerick City.
