United States Botanic Garden
Bogs typically have nutrient poor soils and acidic conditions unsuitable for most plants. However, many organisms, like pitcherplants (Sarracenia spp.), have evolved to thrive in these conditions, and as a result bogs are some of the most diverse habitats in North America. Habitat loses and over-collection have led to many carnivorous plant species becoming endangered. Today it is illegal in most of the United States to collect carnivorous plants from the wild.HM Number | HM235X |
