Colonel Ned H. Gates, often known as "Father of The Dalles," built this building in 1870. Colonel Gates was active in the organization of The Dalles by surveying the original plat and drafting the city's charter which was presented to the Oregon Territorial Legislature. The charter was adopted in June 8, 1857. This Italianate-style building once had a cast iron front, and was used as a hotel for many years.
