1941-1945
At the beginning of World War II, the US Army established Camp George A. White in a part of Jackson County then known as the Agate Desert as a training cantonment. Soldiers from across the nation, including women and southern Oregon's first large coatingent of African-Americans, arrived here for "basic," boot camp, training. Camp White covered seventy-seven square miles, as far north as Shady Cove, with two giant ranges flanking the central one mile-wide and four mile-long "Building Core." More than 1300 buildings were erected in just eight months to house and train the 91st "Pine Tree" Division along with engineers, artillery, and medical units.HM Number | HM24J5 |
