“Deadeyes”

Activated on September 5, 1918 (World War I). Demobilized January 7, 1919. Became Oregon's Reserve Division in 1923. Activated to active duty August 15, 1942 at Camp Adair with orders to be Combat Ready as soon as possible. Trained at Camp Adair, Fort Lewis, San Luis Obispo, and Bend Desert. Left United States July 25, 1944 for Hawaii. Landed on Leyte on October 20, 1944, as one of the first Combat Units to invade the Philippines. 603 killed, 1,402 injured. Landed on Okinawa of April 1, 1945. 1,598 killed, 5,614 injured. Returned to Philippines July 1945 for training on invasion of Japan. Returned to Unites States in February, 1946.
