War of 1812 Bicentennial
—United States Capital for a Day —
The Briggs House was built in 1803 for Hanna Brooke Briggs and her husband Isaac Briggs, who were still living here in 1814. The Briggses also owned a house and farm known as Sharon in Sandy Spring. Hannah, a devout Quaker, married Isaac Briggs in 1794, but not before a prenuptial agreement was drawn up on her behalf! Isaac was an engineer, surveyor and agriculturalist. Thomas Jefferson appointed him as General Surveyor of the Mississippi Territory and he was also the chief engineer for the eastern portion of the Erie Canal.HM Number | HM25NS |
