The Ahuehuete of the Querétaro River
In this place where the water and the roads converge, where the rich land of Querétaro has united cultures, stoicly stands the oldest tree in the city of Santiago de Querétaro. A tireless ahuehuete (Taxodium huegelii), more than 170 years old, has been a faithful witness to the great economic and urban development of our city.In Náhuatl ahuehuete means "the old man of the water." It is a species native to North America, can reach up to 35 meters in height and can live to be 700 years old. Also known as Moctezuma cypress, sabino or Mexican cypress, it was named the National Tree of Mexico in 1921 when the 100th anniversary of the Independence of Mexico was commemorated. Its beauty, longevity and tradition make it a worthy guardian of our history. This bridge, known as the "river connection", is an example of the responsible and timely decisions taken that are related to the infrastructure requirements of the city's inhabitants. An urban improvement carried out in 2016 by the Government of the State

of Querétaro, it takes into account not only basic transportation needs, but also the need for recreational areas, improvement to the urban image, intervention in this section of the river as it passes through the Calesa Neighborhood, as well as the protection of the environment. We invite the inhabitants and visitors of this city to take care of and protect this urban space, as well as to keep its green areas in good condition, since it is a place for all to enjoy.November 30, 2016.
