—Born in Menard, Texas —

Was a General in the United States Marine Corps and a highly decorated combat veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He is most noted for commanding the 1st Marine Division in Korea during the Inchon invasion and the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir where his Division was completely surrounded by 8 to 10 Chinese divisions, outnumbering the Marines 10 to 1. He led the "Breakout" which saved the Division, an epic battle famous in Marine Corps history. He retired at the rank of four-star General, being advanced in rank for having been specially commended for heroism in combat.
