American scholar and archaeologist who published a paper that revolutionized the world's understanding of Mayan hieroglyphs. Her groundbreaking work influenced archaeologists' interpretation of cultural sites. Her accolades include the 1962 Kidder Award for eminence in American archaeology and the Order of the Quetzal in 1984, Guatemala's highest honor for a foreigner.
