From here you can see surviving parts of the 13th-century main entrance to the Tower. Built for Edward I by 1281, the Middle Tower and Byward Tower were linked by a drawbridge and causeway spanning a water-filled moat. The area below you is now used as a bowling green by the resident Yeoman Warders.
Visitors today still use the causeway to enter the castle, but the moat was filed in 1843.
