Craney Island is 2 miles down, and across the Elizabeth River from this point. There on June 22, 1813, the Virginia Militia under General Robert B. Taylor of Norfolk, without losing a man, defeated 4000 British troops. They had come to destroy Norfolk and Portsmouth. Repulsed at Craney Island they wreaked their vengeance on Hampton, which was taken, pillaged, and well-nigh destroyed.
