While this Brigade was on its way from the Dyer Field to the left of Baird's Division north of the Kelly Field, upon emerging from the woods at this point, marching in deployed lines, two regiments in each, it was attacked in flank at close quarters by Stovall's Brigade of Breckinridge's Division which had entered the field from the north, and by Adams' Brigade of the same Division advancing through the woods on the west. Van Derveer marched his Brigade into the open ground, changed front to the left on a run, laid both lines down and by a volley from the first checked the enemy's advance. He then sent his second line over the first on a charge, the first following instantly and this aided by Goodspeed's Battery of Willich's Brigade, after severe fighting, repulsed Breckinridge's Brigades. The lines on the Union left having been restored, heavy firing being heard at Snodgrass Hill, Van Derveer moved to that



point and joined his Division. The Battery had been sent to the Snodgrass House at the beginning of the movement.
