Surveyor 1846- 1860

—Point of Beginning —

"as I am measuring along the Marlboro Road-
a fine little blue-slate butterfly fluttered over the chain"

To support his philosophical and scientific endeavors, Henry David
Thoreau practiced the profession of surveying to earn a living. He was
well respected in Concord for his surveying work and his results have stood
the test of time. As he surveyed, he took careful note of the
natural world and incorporated his observations into his writing.
