Willich's Brigade

—Johnson's Division —

Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery
4 James, 2 Napoleons.
Willich's Brigade, Johnson's Division, McCook's Corps.
September 20, 1863, Afternoon
Captain Wilbur F. Goodspeed, Commanding.
1st Lieutenant Edmund B. Belding (Wounded)
1st Lieutenant Charles W. Scovill
2d Lieutenant Roland G. Day

Soon after noon the Battery took position on this ground facing south. At about 1:30 p.m., the infantry of the Brigade being in support, the enemy opened on it with artillery. About 50 rounds were fired by the Battery in reply, when the enemy ceased firing. The Battery remained in this position until nearly dark, when a general withdrawal began under the artillery fire of the enemy. This Battery retired firing with prolonges fixed the enemy's artillery pressing in so near that the opposing batteries fired at each other with canister. The Battery was then limbered up and moved north to the vicinity of McDonald's, thence west to the high ground overlooking the Mullis House, where It took position with Willich's and Robertson's (King's) Brigades to cover the withdrawal of the other troops through the McFarland's Gap, and moved with them, reaching Rossville at midnight, and bivouacked. Casualties of the battle: officers wounded 1; men killed 2; men wounded 13; men missing 4; horses wounded
