Brig. Gen. Jefferson C. Davis

—Sept. 20, 1863, 11:15 A.M. —

Davis' Division, McCook's Corps.
Brig. Gen. Jefferson C. Davis.
Sept. 20, 1863, 11:15 A.M.

1st Brigade, Col. P. Sidney Post (Guarding Train).
2d Brigade, Brig. Gen. William P. Carlin.
3d Brigade, Col. John A. Martin.

Carlin's brigade took position on this line on the right of Wood's division about 11:15 A.M. with the third brigade in its rear. Upon the withdrawal of Wood's division to the left of the third brigade began to form on Carlin's left and while so doing Davis' entire line was attacked by Hood's and Hindman's troops and after a brief and desperate fight in which was supported by Laibolot's and Lytle's brigades it was driven from the field to the high ground west of the Crawfish Springs road and thence to McFarlands Gap.
