Wilson Dam and the TVA System
From the very beginning, TVA knew how important Wilson Dam would be to their operations. In fact, the Wilson Dam area served as the headquarters for TVA's initial agricultural and chemical programs. Today, Wilson Dam serves as a training facility for all of TVA's hydroelectric workers.
Through it was completed in 1924, Wilson Dam is still the most powerful conventional hydroelectric dam in the TVA system. But when it comes to TVA dams, hydroelectric power generation is only part of the story. TVA reservoirs create a safe, navigable channel throughout the Tennessee River System-including here at Muscle Shoals-and also provide crucial water storage that prevents the kind of large-scale flooding that used to ravage the region.
TVA is dedicated to becoming the Southeast's leader in increased energy efficiency. Programs like Energy Right Solutions encourage greater energy efficiency in homes through low-interest loans for heat pumps and provide simple things that residents can do to save energy and money.
Looking toward the future with TVA
The future of power generation is looking greener. Thanks to a diverse portfolio of power generation methods, TVA continues to keep energy costs in the Tennessee Valley region below the national average. Today, TVA operates and purchases
power from hydroelectric dams, coal-fired plants, natural gas plants, nuclear plants, a pumped storage hydropower plant and sites powered by wind turbines, methane gas or solar panels.
