The Collegiate Church

Upon this site stood the important and beautiful Collegiate Church of the Annunciation of Our Lady, which was founded in 1355-6 by Henry, First Duke of Lancaster and Fourth Lancastrian Earl of Leicester. When he enlarged his father's hospital for poor folk, and raised the Newarke to the status of a college. Several members of the House of Lancaster and other noted persons were buried in the church, which enshrined a holy thorn, said to be from the crown of Jesus.
