As part of the reorganization of the local administrations in the Habsburg Monarchy, embarked on in the era of Empress and Queen Maria Theresa Habsburg-Lothringen (1740-1780), each country was allotted a building for the County Assembly sessions and for the accomodation (sic) of the county administration staff. The County Palace in Varażdin was built on the land of the abolished Varażden generalate. Master mason Jakov Erber received the plans for the construction from Vienna and adapted them to the town's needs. Vienna court was directly involved in the construction, as is evident from the preserved list of expenses signed personally by Maria Theresa. Ornamenting the facade is a coat of arms granted to Varaždin County in 1763 by the Empress.
