Rye & Camber Coach Chassis

This chassis is from the first coach built by Bagnall's for the opening of the Rye & Camber Tramway in 1895.
The wooden coach body was originally built for three classes of traffic, but was progressively rebuilt over the years. The coach was last used after the closure
of the tramway in 1939 for transporting navy personnel to Rye Harbour in the run up to D Day.
At the end of the war it was sold for use as a hen coup. Rescued by enthusiasts in the mid 1960's, the body was regrettably too far gone to rescue.
Rye & Camber Track

The Rye & Camber Tramway was laid to a gauge of 3 foot the rail used was flat bottom weighing 24lbs per yard and was spiked direct to wooden sleepers. This exhibit uses rail that was rescued from the tramway and some of the spikes are original.
