English translation:Former 'Los Juaninos' ChapelThis chapel was built in the early 18th Century and was part of the 'San Juan de Dios' hospital, now 'Los Juaninos' hotel. During construction, bishop Juan Ortega y Montañes ordered that a space be set aside for 'a chapel or small church' where mass could be said for 'the ill and their care givers.'During the Reform Era (circa 1840), the building was allocated to messrs. Backhaussen, german entrepreneurs who set up a mill and an iron foundry that were later destroyed in a fire. Not long ago, this site was a bank but now it is an area for shops. At the last restoration and remodeling of the building the chapel's floor plan was inverted, the entryway was originally on the opposite side. In addition, a new section was built and more doors and windows were put in.The main façade is clearly baroque in style as evidenced by the pilasters and decorated entablature. The two older sections of the side façade are finished in plaster just as they were originally. Two windows in the upper part and three doors at ground level were opened in order to provide more light for the somber interior. The small nave is covered by three sections of grained vault, separated by two slotted arches and supported by baroque cantilevers. The original wall finishing was totally removed from the inside of the building, baring all masonry work in walls and ceilings.
