NYC Designated Landmark
213 West 58th Street
This elegant French Renaissance style stable was constructed in 1902-03, reminiscent of the early 17th century town houses that line the Places des Vosges in Paris. An early work by noted architects York & Sawyer, it was commissioned by philanthropist Helen Miller Gould, the eldest daughter of financier Jay Gould. Faced with red brick and limestone, the four-story structure features as arched entrance and a steep slate mansard roof flanked by tall chimneys. Built to keep horses and vehicles and to store feed, the structure originally contained apartments for the coachman and groom on the upper floors. The building was converted to commercial use in 1957.
