This Red Oak was moved here from the Westchester County Homestead of
John Jay
First Chief Justice of the United States
as a memorial to
Walter R. Mansfield
1911-1987
who twice parachuted behind enemy lines to organize partisan resistance during World War II and later became a stubbornly independent lawyer and courageous judge.
Gracious, considerate and kind, he served for 21 years as a United States Judge of the Southern District of New York and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
He was always unstinting of self, the first to volunteer, the first to get the job done.
Leader, collator, adjuster of conflict.
Flexible, except in matters of principle, he enjoyed the universal respect and affection of bench and bar.
