Alfred E. Smith (1873-1944) served as Governor of New York from 1919 to 1920 and from 1923 to 1928.
He was the Democratic presidential candidate in 1928. As a result of his dedication to housing and social issues, Al Smith led the state's efforts to rebuild this Oliver Street neighborhood where he was born.
