Near here is the site of John Jermain's Mill,
constructed in 1793 - powered by a ditch
dredged from ponds farther uphill, in an
effort to make Otter Pond commercially
profitable. The Mill failed, as did other
attempts to commercialize the pond.
Finally, Mrs. Russell Sage purchased
the Pond and incorporated it within
Mashashinuet Park.
