The Home for the Friendless, also known as the Woody Crest Home, was constructed in 1901-02 to the design of prominent architect William B. Tuthill. Built for abandoned and needy children, the home was established by the American Female Guardian Society, which was founded in 1834 to aid impoverished women and children. The Woody Crest Home is one of the few remaining grand turn-of-the-century institutional buildings in The Bronx. Skillfully massed and terraced to disguise its size and richly decorated in the fashionable Beaux Arts style, the building appears to be a large mansion rather than an institution. The building was restored in 1991 by Housing & Services, Inc. and serves the community as a long term health care facility.| HM Number | HM2GLL |
