This Victorian Gothic structure was designed in 1888 by Calvert Vaux (co-designer of central and prospect parks) and George Radford. Donated by John Jacob Astor III "in affection and remembrance" of his wife Charlotte, a supporter of the Society, it served as a center for the education and care of neighborhood immigrant children.
Plaque presented by friends of Dennis Steadman Francis (1942-1980), architectural historian whose efforts led to the building's designation as a New York City Landmark in 1977
