The Pennsylvania State College first admitted women undergraduates in 1871, and Jane W. Hoyt served as the first preceptress and Dean of Women from 1872 until 1874. She was also an instructor in German and French. At that time, Penn State was one of only about a dozen higher education institutions in Pennsylvania that were coeducation.
