Completed in 1842, the third treasury building now forms the East wing of the present structure at 15th and Pennsylvania Ave., N.W. in Washington, D.C. From 1907 to 1910, the thirty original exterior sandstone columns were replaced by monolithic granite ones.

About 1910 the owner of Gunston Hall in Lorton, Virginia acquired the column base and inverted capital shown here as a decorative garden monument. In 1950 Gunston Hall transferred the two pieces to Fort Belvoir.
