Hamilton Graving Dock opened in 1867. It was almost twice the size of No. 2 Graving Dock which had been completed in 1826.

Hamilton Graving Dock cost just under £30,000 to build, a huge investment. By comparison, a small house cost around £150 to build in the 1860s.
