Karl Stirner Arts Trail

The banks of the Bushkill Creek near 3rd Street have long been a center of industry and commerce in Easton. The area has transitioned several times, but has always played a major role in the vibrancy of the community.
One of the earliest developments in the area was the Brotzman and Herster Mill, which was constructed in 1789 just east of what is now the N. 3rd Street Bridge over the Bushkill Creek. By 1868, this merchant mill had a capacity of 50 barrels a day using a 9 foot drop of water from a dam located several hundred feet upstream from the mill. This part of the City was also home to a series of breweries and distilleries, one of the more prominent of which was the Seitz Brewery which utilized several buildings throughout downtown Easton.
Since 1832, this area has served as the entrance to Lafayette College. The gateway at the [sic] base of College Hill was erected by the Class of 1929 using stones from the old Green Observatory.
Today, Lafayette College is spearheading another transition of this area. The College dedicated the Williams Visual Arts Center in 2001, which serves as the home to Lafayette's studio art program and is one of the leading high-tech facilities for art education and exhibitions in the nation. Lafayette College has also acquired additional properties in the area and plans to continue its

efforts to transform the N. 3rd Street neighborhood into a vibrant gateway to the City of Easton and Lafayette College.
