Is dún mór, urdhúnta, peinteagánach, é An Seandaingean agus é taobh istigh de rampar ithreach agus fóid agus uchtbhalla air. Áiríonn na cosaintí lasmuigh díog agus frithbhalla, agus bealach clúdaithe ar an taobh thiar. Tá an bealach isteach lonnaithe ar an imbhalla theas. I 1611 méadaíodh cosaintí an dúin nuair a tógadh daingean cloch laistigh, teach geata agus droichead tógála. I 1649 ghabh tacadóirí de chuid Chromail an dún gan choimhlint. I 1667 dhéan an Tiarna Orrery tuilleadh oibre ar na cosaintí. Ar an 3 Deireadh Fómhair, 1690, d'ionsaigh agus thóg saighdiúirí ar Rí Liam an Seandaingean, agus iad faoi cheannas Diúc Wurttenburg agus John Churchill, an chéad Diúc ar Marlborough níos déanaí. Following the Battle of Kinsale, construction work began on James Fort in 1602 under the direction of engineer Paul Ive. It was completed in 1604 at a cost of £645. James Fort is a large pentagonal bastioned fort and is enclosed by a rampart of earth and sod with a parapet. The outer defences include a ditch and counter scarp, and a covered way on the west side. The entrance is situated on the southern curtain wall. In 1611 the fort[']s defences were augmented with the construction of an inner stone citadel, a gatehouse and drawbridge. In 1649 the fort was captured by Cromwellian supporters without a struggle. In 1667 further work on the defences was undertaken by Lord Orrery. On October 3rd, 1690, James Fort was attacked and taken by Williamite sold[i]ers under the command of the Duke of Wurttenburg [sic-Württemberg], and John Churchill, later 1st Duke of Marlborough. Colonel O'Driscoll had held the fort for King James II.
James Fort was declared a National Monument in 1970. Archaeological excavations were carried out in James Fort throughout the 1980's and again in 1998, by University College Cork, on behalf of the Office of Public Works.
