— Canton Safety Director 1952-1957 · Mayor of the City of Canton 1964-1983 —

Mayor Stanley A. Cmich was Canton's longest serving mayor, holding office for 20 years. Mayor Cmich served in the U.S. Army in World War II and was awarded two Purple Heart decorations. He began his career in public service in the City of Canton as Safety Director and became well known for leading a crusade to eradicate vice and corruption in the city, which had earned Canton the dubious nickname "Little Chicago." Mayor Cmich subsequently ran for mayor and was elected to the Office of Mayor six times.
We thank Mayor Cmich for the dedication, honesty, courtesy and dignity that he brought to the Office of Mayor.
